Best Places To Retire

Life after retirement - where should we live?

Where are the best places to retire? We have all heard about Arizona, California, and Florida, but how about Bozeman, Montana, or Concord, New Hampshire, or Fayetteville, Arkansas,. These cities were identified as being among the top 10 best places to retire by U.S. News newswriters in an article published by U.S News on September 20, 2007. Scroll down for additional locations.

There are many factors to consider when answering this question. Each one of us must filter through a multitude of choices and finally choose one that fits our requirements best. With the lengthening of life spans, where it has been said that age 100 is now the new age 80, we may find that the decisions we make today will not be our final retirement destination decisions. Based upon various statistics, many publications have designated their own "Best Places to Retire". Ultimately, the best place to retire is the place that meets our idividual reqirements. Let's begin our individualized search for the best place to retire by scanning the factors below and following the links on this page.

Following are some factors for us to consider when contemplating changing our living environment and finding our best place to retire:

• Is there a desire to leave our current location? Why?

• Will changing living arrangements in our current location satisfy our needs?

• Do we downsize to a smaller house or to an apartment?

• Do we relocate from our current city or town to be closer to family and/or friends?

• Does our health dictate that we need to change environments?

If we decide that we need to consider moving, how do we decide what is best for us?

• What kind of lifestyle do we desire? Physically challenging with plenty of recreational activities such as hiking and skiing? Maybe a little more relaxing recreation such as golf or boating? Maybe the seclusion of hunting or fishing? Or possibly the ability to enjoy various artistic and theatrical endeavors? All of these factors and more will be important in our final decision.

• What type of climate do we seek for our retirement years? Maybe our best place to retire has clearly defined four seasons each year? Or are we satisfied with locations that don’t have a marked difference between seasons? Our health may have some bearing on the type of climate we wish to enjoy.

• What types of medical facilities are available and the response time for emergency care could be a major factor in deciding between a larger metropolis rather than a smaller community.

• What is the cost of living and how does it differ from where we currently live? Many of us will be on fixed incomes with dollars coming from private pension funds, Social Security, and possible distribution of personal assets. With the number of years that will be devoted to retirement we will want to maximize those resources.

• What are the opportunities for volunteerism in order to make a difference in our community?

• What are employment opportunities in the event we decide to supplement our retirement income?

Our own special "best place to retire" will come from examining the above in more detail. We will explore some of these questions as we follow the links on this page.
